Micah 1:1

1Yahweh’s word that came to Micah of Morasheth in the days of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah, which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem.

Devotional

Here is what we know about Micah he was from Moresheth and he lived during the time when Jotham, Ahaz and then Hezekiah reigned as king in Judah.  It’s not much to go on but it tells us a lot if we exam it closely.   Due to the fact that we know which kings he lived under we can date his ministry and place him with his contemporary prophets, who were Hosea and Isaiah.

Isaiah lived in Jerusalem, he was a nobleman related to the king and was au fait with life in leadership.  Hosea was also a prophet but he lived in the Northern Kingdom, he ministered to the 10 tribes that had broken away from Judah.  While Micah lived in Moresheth which was a rural, non-affluent town about 25miles south west of Jerusalem.  These 3 men lived in a time when there were many false prophets and the people were caught up in idolatry, yet they carried the truth of God in their own place.  God wanted everyone to hear his word, he wanted everyone to have the opportunity to return their hearts to him.  God understood and acknowledged the intricacy of each culture and the need of the people.  He sent a Northman to the north, a nobleman to the courts and capital and a man who knew poverty to the highways and byways of the southern kingdom.

In every group, in every culture, in every generation God wants his voice to be heard and understood.  We are to be God’s voice in our time and in our setting.
