Proverbs 3:16

16Length of days is in her right hand.

In her left hand are riches and honor.

Devotional

It is important to understand the context in which the bible books are written.  The wisdom sayings are exactly what they are described as ‘proverbs’ they should not be mistaken as promises.  They are general truths to be used in specific circumstances.
For example the proverb ‘less haste more speed’ can be used in many circumstances to reduce rush and increase organisation.  However it is not suitable for events like an auction or a cardiac arrest.  In these cases the proverb ‘he who hesitates is lost’ might be more appropriate.

It is important to know the difference between a proverb and a promise otherwise it can lead to great disappointment. Proverbs 3:16 says commit your ways to the lord and he will establish your plans.  That doesn’t mean we can just start something and expect it to work because we prayed about it.  If we read this as a promise and things don’t work out we blame our lack of faith or even God.  Of course it’s good to commit everything to God it is the right thing to do, but it doesn’t guarantee success. These proverbs are meant for general wisdom in every day living they are not formulas for guaranteed success, that is not a promise God gives.  God’s promises are not about material gain they are about his eternal presence.
