Proverbs 4:23

23Keep your heart with all diligence,

for out of it is the wellspring of life.

Devotional

My favourite Proverb is 4:23 guard your heart for it is the wellspring of your life. As a cardiac nurse I am all too aware that the heart is the wellspring of our lives in a physical sense. In my line of work we encourage people to look after their hearts by controlling their blood pressure, giving up smoking, reduce fatty foods from their diet and take regular exercise in this way they reduce the risk of heart disease and increase their chances of living a healthy life.

In biblical terms the heart is often referred to as the centre of our emotional or thought life it is our very being and our mind. Through the wisdom that God gave to him, Solomon reminds us that we should also look after our spiritual heart and mind.   This in turn will help us live spiritually healthy lives. Let’s be careful not to hold onto hurts so they become bitterness or envy so it becomes resentment.  We should be careful not to allow sinful thoughts to overwhelm are imaginations.  We need to be careful to be open to God’s truths of mercy, love and justice, but be careful about giving room to what is not Godly or helpful.  We also need to guard against feelings that cause us to dislike ourselves, we are loved, accepted and adopted by the King of Kings.
